چکیده

The visualization and analysis of complex fields often requires identifying and extracting domain specific features. Through a collaboration with geophysicists we extend previous work on crease surfaces with a new and complimentary definition: extremas in principal surface curvature rather than scalar value. Using this definition, we visualize the resulting surfaces which correspond to individual wave fronts. As these wave fronts propagate through a control structure (medium), they undergo changes in intensity, shape and topology due to reflection, refraction and interference. We demonstrate our ability to effectively visualize these phenomena in complex data sets including a large-scale simulation of a hypothetical earthquake along the San Andreas fault in Southern

Normal Vector Voting: Crease Detection and Curvature Estimation on Large, Noisy Meshes

This paper describes a robust method for crease detection and curvature estimation on large, noisy triangle meshes. We assume that these meshes are approximations of piecewise-smooth surfaces derived from range or medical imaging systems and thus may exhibit measurement or even registration noise. The proposed algorithm, which we call normal vector voting, uses an ensemble of triangles in the g...

Efficient Multi-scale Curvature and Crease Estimation

We consider the problem of multi-scale estimation of principal curvatures and crease lines on a surface represented with a mesh of triangles and affected by noise. We show that curvature at different scales can be efficiently and accurately estimated by modifying a fitting technique and applying it to neighborhoods of various size, depending on scale: we discard bending portions of surfaces dur...

Creaseness from Level Set Extrinsic Curvature

Creases are a type of ridge/valley{like structures of a d dimensional image, characterized by local conditions. As creases tend to be at the center of anisotropic grey{level shapes, creaseness can be considered as a type of medialness. Among the several crease deenitions, one of the most important is based on the extrema of the level set curvatures. In 2{d it is used the curvature of the level ...

A Novel Approach for Detection of Edges in Range Images Using Splines

In this paper we propose an approach for detection of edges of range images using a local statistics for detection of crease edges. The jump edges are first located using the ratio of the slopes as a measure. For the detection of crease edges, curvature is estimated a t all the data points using the first and second order derivatives of the smoothing spline. The local maximas of curvature are c...

Surface reconstruction of detect contours for medical image registration purpose

Although, most of the abnormal structures of human brain do not alter the shape of outer envelope of brain (surface), some abnormalities can deform the surface extensively. However, this may be a major problem in a surface-based registration technique, since two nearly identical surfaces are required for surface fitting process. A type of verification known as the circularity check for th...
